Study Reveals Cost Barriers in Pet Care

Study Reveals Cost Barriers in Pet Care

By Jamie Martin

A nationwide survey of veterinarians has highlighted a major challenge affecting animal healthcare: the rising cost of veterinary treatment. The study found that financial limitations often prevent pets from receiving recommended medical care.

According to the survey, nearly all veterinarians report that client finances sometimes or often restrict their ability to provide recommended treatments. Cost is identified as the leading reason pet owners decline veterinary services.

The study also found a gap in perception between veterinarians and pet owners. Many veterinarians believe they offer alternative treatment options when cost becomes a concern. However, many pet owners say they did not receive a more affordable option when they declined care.

Differences in perception also appear when it comes to financial assistance programs. Some veterinarians say they frequently provide financing or payment plans to help families manage treatment costs. Yet many pet owners report they have never been offered these options.

Another key issue identified in the research is the limited training veterinarians receive for discussing financial concerns. Nearly half say their education did not prepare them to handle conversations about affordability, while others report only minimal preparation.

“After listening to pet parents, it was essential that we also hear directly from veterinarians. They, too, experience the emotional toll when financial barriers stand between pets and recommended care,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities.

“These findings highlight the need for upfront, more compassionate conversations about care between veterinarians and the families they serve. When we work together to address these challenges; more pets can access the veterinary care that keeps them healthy and at home with the families who love them,” said Gilbreath.

The financial pressure surrounding veterinary care also creates emotional stress for both veterinarians and pet owners. Many veterinarians say it is difficult to watch families struggle to afford care for their animals. In some cases, veterinarians report that pets are euthanized because treatment is too expensive.

To address these challenges, researchers point to the “Spectrum of Care” approach. This model encourages veterinarians to tailor treatment plans based on the pet’s medical needs, the client’s financial situation, and the resources available within the veterinary practice.

“Veterinarians enter this field because they care deeply about the welfare of animals,” said Dr. Robyn Jaynes, director of veterinary affairs at PetSmart Charities. “They too are impacted by the rising costs of delivering care for their businesses and their own mental wellness. We’re grateful to those who contributed to this study. Their insights and engagement are critical in evolving affordable solutions that meet the needs of pet parents and for veterinarians and their teams.”

While most veterinarians are familiar with this framework, only about half of them say they use it regularly. Experts believe expanding training, improving communication, and developing more affordable care options could help increase access to veterinary services for pets across the country.
