Cover Crop Summit Supports Soil Health Decisions

Cover Crop Summit Supports Soil Health Decisions

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University Extension is hosting the 2026 Cover Crop Summit on April 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. MST. The event will take place at the Dickinson Research Extension Center in Dickinson, North Dakota, with additional in-person satellite locations and a Zoom option for remote participants.

The summit focuses on practical approaches to using cover crops in modern farming systems. It is designed for farmers, ranchers, and agricultural professionals who want to better understand how cover crops fit into real operations. The event highlights current research, economic considerations, livestock integration, and first-hand farmer experiences.

Participants may attend in person in Dickinson, at one of several Research Extension Center host locations across the state, or from home through Zoom. Sessions will be recorded, allowing participants to review information later. A free lunch will be provided to all in-person attendees at Dickinson and satellite locations.

The program will begin with registration, coffee, and refreshments, followed by a full day of educational sessions. Topics include updates to the North Dakota cover crop guide, cover crops in state cropping systems, livestock integration, economics, cost-share programs, and farmer experiences. The agenda also includes open discussion and evaluation.

In addition to producer education, the event features a Student Fact Sheet Contest. Students are invited to create a 1- or 2-page fact sheet on cover crops to share with farmers. Entries will be based on student research or trusted sources. Fact sheets will be available in print at in-person locations and digitally for virtual attendees. A cash prize will be awarded to the top entry.

There is no cost to attend the summit but registration is required to help organizers plan meals and materials. Those attending remotely will receive Zoom access details by email.

The Cover Crop Summit provides a valuable opportunity to learn, connect, and explore practical cover crop strategies that support soil health, farm productivity, and long-term sustainability.
