USDA Offers Aid to Farmers After Tornadoes

USDA Offers Aid to Farmers After Tornadoes

By Scout Nelson

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) provides low-interest physical loss loans to support agricultural producers affected by natural disasters. These loans help farmers repair or replace damaged or destroyed property essential for their operations, including livestock, farm buildings, equipment, perennial crops, fruit and nut trees, and harvested or stored crops and hay.

Producers in North Dakota who experienced damage from high winds or tornadoes are eligible to apply. Primary counties include Grand Forks, Griggs, and Steele, with contiguous counties Benson, Cass, Eddy, Foster, Nelson, Stutsman, Traill, and Walsh also eligible. In Minnesota, Marshall and Polk counties are included.

Physical loss loans are designed to provide timely financial support to maintain farm operations and reduce long-term economic impact. A certificate of documentation or evidence of losses may be required to process applications. Producers are encouraged to contact their, local USDA Service Center for guidance on loan applications and eligibility requirements.

The application deadline for these disaster assistance loans is October 2, 2026. Eligible producers can use the funds to repair or replace property damaged or destroyed by the natural disaster, helping restore normal farm operations quickly and efficiently.

“These loans provide essential support for producers to recover from natural disasters and protect their livelihoods,” says a USDA representative. “We encourage all eligible producers to apply and take advantage of this program to ensure their operations continue successfully.”

The program is part of USDA’s ongoing commitment to support farmers and ranchers affected by natural disasters and maintain a strong agricultural community.
