The North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, known as NCR-SARE, is inviting nominations for a new seat on its Administrative Council. The position is open to one state Department of Agriculture representative who lives and works within the 12 states included in the North Central region. These states include Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
The Administrative Council plays an important role in guiding sustainable agriculture efforts across the region. Members represent a wide range of agricultural backgrounds and help set program priorities while making grant funding decisions. The council includes farmers, ranchers, extension professionals, researchers, nonprofit leaders, government representatives, and agribusiness members. This broad mix helps ensure that many viewpoints are included when supporting agricultural innovation.
The selected representative serves a three-year term. Council members attend two in-person meetings each year, usually held in February and July at locations across the Midwest. Members also take part in several virtual meetings throughout the year. Travel costs for official meetings are fully covered, allowing participants to focus on their leadership role.
Applicants should have a strong understanding of sustainable agriculture and be comfortable reviewing grant proposals and working within a group decision-making process. During their term, council members are not eligible to apply for SARE funding, helping maintain fairness in grant decisions. More information about NCR-SARE and the Administrative Council is online at https://northcentral.sare.org/about/ncr-sare-leadership-and-policies/.
To apply, candidates submit their areas of interest in sustainable agriculture, explain why they want to serve, and provide a short biography or resume that outlines qualifications and experience. Submit the following information using our online form. Applications are due March 31, 2026, by 4:00 p.m. Central Time.
NCR-SARE is one of four regional offices supporting the nationwide SARE program. Since 1988, the organization has awarded more than $80 million in competitive grants to support farmers, researchers, educators, and organizations working to advance sustainable agriculture practices. The program continues to support innovation, education, and long-term resilience in agriculture across the region.
