Rural communities across the United States continued to experience population growth in 2024. The rural population reached 46.2 million people, accounting for 13.6% of the nation's total population.
From July 2023 through June 2024, rural areas posted a population growth rate of 0.29%. Urban areas grew faster at 1.08%, but rural regions continued their recent upward trend.
The primary factor behind rural growth was positive net migration. More people moved into rural communities than left them, providing an important source of population gains. This migration trend has helped offset demographic challenges faced by many rural areas.
Although rural regions still recorded more deaths than births, natural population losses declined compared to previous years. The smaller gap between deaths and births contributed to stronger population performance overall.
Rural America has been growing steadily since 2021 after a long period marked by limited growth. Stable migration patterns and reduced natural losses have supported this improvement.
Growth momentum strengthened between 2022 and 2023. The rural growth rate more than doubled, increasing from 0.14% to 0.37%. This reflected both continued migration gains and improved demographic conditions.
Urban areas have traditionally experienced larger population increases because they benefit from both migration and natural population growth. However, the recent performance of rural regions shows increasing interest in rural living and continued demographic stability.
