North Dakota State University (NDSU) Bison Strides will host four Horse Powered Reading camps from August 17 to 20 at the NDSU Equine Center in Fargo, North Dakota. The camps are designed for children ages 5 to 12 and combine reading education with hands-on activities involving horses.
The camps provide young participants with a unique learning experience where they work alongside trained horses while improving reading skills. Children will create obstacle courses, groom horses, lead them through activities, and participate in reading exercises designed to build confidence, teamwork, and communication. The program also encourages mindfulness, independence, and positive social interaction.
Bison Strides uses horse-assisted learning to help participants strengthen important life skills in a supportive setting. The activities are designed to make learning enjoyable while allowing children to develop stronger reading abilities through practical experiences with horses.
“These camps are a great opportunity to introduce youth to horses,” says Erika Berg, Bison Strides program director. “It's a unique opportunity to connect with horses in an engaging and supportive environment.”
Camp sessions are divided by age groups. Children ages 5 to 8 can attend on August 17 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. or August 20 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Camps for youth ages 9 to 12 will be held on August 18 from 9:00 a.m. to noon and August 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Horse Powered Reading program offers an enjoyable way for children to improve literacy while learning responsibility, teamwork, and confidence through positive interactions with horses.
