North Dakota Wheat Update: Favorable Conditions and Variable Crop Ratings

North Dakota Wheat Update: Favorable Conditions and Variable Crop Ratings

The most recent information on the state's wheat crops is provided by the North Dakota Wheat Commission. After a slow start, crop development for the spring wheat crop is practically at typical levels. Similar to North Dakota, the U.S. spring wheat crop has emerged to about 90% of its total area. Sixty percent of spring wheat is now considered to be in good to outstanding condition nationwide, down from six percent last week.

In North Dakota, overall crop conditions remain mostly favorable, with 67% of the crop rated as good to excellent. However, conditions vary across the state due to challenging growing conditions in some areas. Higher temperatures and below-average precipitation in the first half of June have caused stress in certain regions, while others report excellent conditions. Precipitation has been sporadic, ranging from minimal to excessive in different areas. Recent temperature cooling is expected to aid crop development.

In North Dakota, the durum crop has finished planting, and development is progressing more quickly than it did last year. The majority of the planted durum has emerged, indicating outstanding overall condition. In comparison to other areas of the state, the primary durum-producing region has seen milder temperatures, and typically good moisture levels have led to favourable crop stands. 88 percent of the durum cultivated in North Dakota is in good to excellent condition, according to the USDA/NASS crop progress report. In Montana, 71% of the durum has emerged, with 34% in good shape and 64% in fair.
