NDSU Program Supports Therapy with Horses

By Scout Nelson

Bison Strides, an equine-assisted services program at North Dakota State University (NDSU), has once again achieved the prestigious status of Premier Accredited Center from the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International. The reaccreditation was officially granted on June 16.

The program supports individuals with disabilities and veterans by partnering them with horses to improve strength, resilience, and independence. Achieving this premier status means the program has met nearly 200 rigorous standards set by PATH Intl., a leading organization in the equine-assisted services industry.

Out of more than 760 PATH Intl. member centers across the world, only 250 have earned this elite designation. Bison Strides has demonstrated excellence in horse management, safety, instruction quality, and best practices in administration.

Two trained evaluators from PATH Intl. reviewed the Bison Strides program and awarded it a 99% score based on various criteria, including facility operations, volunteer engagement, equipment standards, and participant care. The reaccreditation is valid for five years.

“Everyone at Bison Strides is very proud to have earned Premier Accredited Center status again,” said Erika Berg, Bison Strides director and an associate professor in the NDSU Department of Animal Sciences. “It speaks to the quality of services NDSU staff and students are able to provide for our community and the care our horses receive.”

“By reattaining its PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center status, NDSU Bison Strides has demonstrated a commitment to the highest standards when introducing individuals with special needs to a variety of equine-assisted services,” said Kathy Alm, PATH Intl. chief executive officer. “PATH Intl. accreditation is a respected benchmark in the equine-assisted services industry. It demonstrates leadership and a commitment to safety and to the highest professional standards.”

This reaccreditation confirms that Bison Strides continues to be a leader in offering safe, effective, and compassionate equine-assisted services for the community.
