Forecasters are warning of severe weather across North Dakota this afternoon, evening, and overnight. Thunderstorms are expected to develop and move across the state, bringing multiple hazards with them.
According to Megan Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Bismarck, most of the state is under a level three out of five risk, which means numerous severe thunderstorms are likely. These storms could bring large hail, damaging wind gusts, and possible tornadoes.
Jones explains that the timing of the storms is still being worked out due to morning rain showers in northwestern areas. She says two storm scenarios are likely today. The first involves storms moving in from eastern Montana early this afternoon. These may affect western and central North Dakota, with a full range of hazards possible.
Later in the evening, a second wave of storms may develop and move through overnight. This line of storms could mainly bring strong straight-line winds, but spin-up tornadoes are still possible along the storm line.
Looking ahead, another level three threat is forecast for tomorrow, particularly across eastern North Dakota. these conditions may be influenced by today’s weather events.
