North Dakota Youth Get Boost in Sheep Industry

North Dakota Youth Get Boost in Sheep Industry

North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension, in partnership with the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association, presents a golden opportunity for the state's youth. Their unique Starter Flock Discounted Loan Program, now in its remarkable 15th year, is designed to usher young minds into the sheep industry.

Participants receive an interest-free loan to purchase 10 Rambouillet ewes from NDSU's Hettinger Research Extension Center (HREC). These ewes offer a low initial input cost and no interest, providing a valuable learning opportunity.

A major highlight of this program is its emphasis on guidance. Every young participant is paired with a mentor, ensuring they have the necessary support in navigating the intricacies of sheep farming. Whether it's answering questions, assisting with record-keeping, or helping set clear management goals, these mentors are there every step of the way.

Travis Hoffman, an Extension sheep specialist, emphasizes the importance of the initiative, which introduces youth to business management, record-keeping, and finance handling. Over 130 young producers in North Dakota have already benefited from this program.

The conditions for this loan remain favorable for the youth. They're only required to repay 70% of the ewe's value. With flexible repayment terms spanning over three years, it truly provides a low-risk start.
