NDSU Partners with Gateway to Science

NDSU Partners with Gateway to Science

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University (NDSU) partners with North Dakota’s Gateway to Science to expand science, technology, engineering, and math learning for K–12 students across the state. The new agreement supports hands-on learning with a strong focus on rural and underserved schools.

The partnership combines NDSU’s academic knowledge with Gateway to Science’s mobile outreach program. This program travels to schools and communities to bring learning experiences directly to students. By working together, both groups aim to make high-quality STEM learning available to more children, no matter where they live.

State leaders and education officials support the partnership because it helps give students better learning chances. “I’m honored to be here today celebrating a partnership that is truly about our kids and their futures,” said Lt. Governor Strinden. “When we invest in K-12 education, we’re investing early, when curiosity is highest and possibilities feel endless. This partnership ensures that ZIP code does not determine opportunity, that every child deserves access to engaging, high-quality learning experiences.”

The partnership plans to create new STEM activity kits. These kits match NDSU’s engineering and agricultural technology lessons and give students hands-on practice. Schools will also receive support through outreach events and special learning programs that encourage students to explore science and technology topics.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to making STEM education accessible to every student in North Dakota,” said Beth Demke, CEO of North Dakota’s Gateway to Science. “By combining our mobile outreach capabilities with NDSU’s academic strengths, we can bring engaging, hands-on learning to classrooms across the state.”

NDSU leaders believe the program will help students connect classroom learning with real-life uses. “NDSU is proud to collaborate with North Dakota’s Gateway to Science to connect classroom learning with real-world applications. These experiences will help students see the possibilities in engineering and technology and encourage them to pursue education and careers that strengthen our state’s workforce,” said Alan Kallmeyer, Dean of the NDSU College of Engineering.

The partnership also highlights engineering and precision agriculture, two important areas in the state. New STEM zone kits give middle and high school students special lessons focused on careers in these growing fields. These efforts help build interest, skills, and future job pathways.
