North Dakota producers planted 5.40 million acres of other spring wheat in 2022, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 2% from a year ago. Other spring wheat to be harvested for grain is estimated at 5.25 million acres, up 1% from last year.
Durum wheat planted acreage is estimated at 1,050,000 acres, up 19% from a year earlier. Harvested area is expected to total 1,015,000 acres, up 24% from last year. Winter wheat planted last fall totaled 100,000 acres, up 11% from last year. Harvested area is expected to total 90,000 acres, up 50% from last year
Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 5.90 million acres, down 19% from last year. Of these, 92% were planted with genetically modified, herbicide resistant seed, down 1 percentage point from 2021. Producers expect to harvest 5.85 million acres, down 18% from a year ago.
Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 3.00 million acres this year, down 27% from 2021. Of the total acres, 94% were planted with biotechnology varieties, up 2 percentage point from 2021. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 2.75 million acres, down 24% from a year ago.
Barley producers planted 690,000 acres, up 19% from last year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 565,000 acres, up 31% from a year ago.
Oats planted for all purposes is estimated at 360,000 acres, up 1% from last year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 120,000 acres, up 45% from last year.
Rye planted for all purposes is estimated at 95,000 acres, up 8% from last year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 55,000 acres, up 53% from last year.
Canola planted acreage is estimated at 1.57 million acres, down 10% from last year. Area to be harvested is estimated at 1.55 million acres, down 10% from a year ago.
Oil sunflower planted area is estimated at 680,000 acres, up 48% from last year. An estimated 660,000 acres is expected to be harvested, up 47%from a year ago. Non-oil sunflower planted area is estimated at 55,000 acres, up 62% from the previous year. Harvested area is estimated at 52,000 acres, up 63% from the previous year.
Flaxseed planted acreage, at 135,000 acres, is down 29% from a year ago. Area to be harvested is estimated at 127,000 acres, down 26% from last year.
Dry edible bean planted acres are estimated at 580,000, down 12% from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 560,000 acres, down 10% from a year ago.
All chickpea planted acres are estimated at 11,000 acres, down 33% from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 10,500 acres, down 33% from last year.
Dry edible pea planted acres is estimated at 260,000, up 2% from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 248,000 acres, up 2% from a year ago.
Lentil planted area is estimated at 95,000 acres, down 21% from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 90,000 acres, down 21% from a year ago.
Sugarbeet planted acres, at 243,000, are up 8% from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 235,000 acres, up 6% from the previous year.
Potato planted acreage is estimated at 73,000 acres, down 4% from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 71,000, down 5% from a year ago. Percent planted by type totals 42% Russet, 31% white, 23% red and blue, and 4% yellow.
Alfalfa acreage to be harvested for dry hay is estimated at 1.05 million acres, up 14% from last year. Other hay acreage to be cut for dry hay is estimated at 1.25 million acres, up 14% from a year ago.
The estimates of planted and harvested acreages in this news release are based primarily on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of June.
