The State 4-H Livestock Skill-a-Thon Contest will be held on September 20, 2025, in Bismarck, North Dakota, at the Burleigh County Extension Office. This event is designed to challenge and educate youth on livestock production, management, and animal science skills, while encouraging teamwork and agricultural learning.
Participants are expected to arrive by 9:00 AM, with the contest officially beginning at 10:00 AM. All contestants must be seated and ready no later than 9:55 AM to ensure a prompt start. Registration closes September 6, giving participants time to prepare for the event.
The contest will follow the official National 4-H Skill-a-Thon rules, which set the standard for fairness and consistency across competitions. These rules guide participants through a variety of hands-on activities, identification tasks, and written challenges. Skill areas often include livestock breeds, feed samples, equipment identification, and general management practices.
The Skill-a-Thon provides an opportunity for young people to put their livestock knowledge to the test in a competitive yet educational environment. It encourages problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making, skills essential for success in the agriculture industry. By competing, participants also gain confidence and experience that can help them in future academic, or career paths related to farming, veterinary science, and animal production.
Heather Gessner, SDSU Extension Specialist, notes that contests like this strengthen agricultural education by engaging students in hands-on learning. The program not only highlights livestock knowledge but also fosters teamwork and leadership among participants.
The event is open to all eligible 4-H youth who have an interest in livestock production and a passion for agriculture. Families and supporters are welcome to attend and encourage contestants throughout the day.
The 4-H Livestock Skill-a-Thon Contest is more than a competition, it is a chance for young agricultural leaders to showcase their skills, learn from peers, and build a strong foundation for their future in farming and animal management.
