National 4-H week celebrates youth development

National 4-H week celebrates youth development

By Scout Nelson

Every first week of October, a national celebration buzzes with energy: National 4-H Week. This event, attended by youth, parents, and numerous volunteers, sheds light on the vital role 4-H plays in youth development.

Leigh Ann Skurupey from North Dakota State University, an advocate for 4-H youth development, emphasizes how young people, when paired with adults, can usher in a brighter future for communities. She says, "Our National 4-H Week spotlights our outstanding young leaders who tirelessly work to better their surroundings."

The foundational belief of 4-H is empowering youth. When these young minds are given the freedom to chase their passions, they evolve into community leaders, driving positive change in their lives and surroundings. North Dakota alone boasts nearly 31,000 youth as part of this initiative.

Research and studies underline the numerous benefits of being part of 4-H. The youth involved in 4-H outshine their peers by:

  • Actively contributing to their communities.
  • Engaging more in civic activities.
  • Showing keen interest in science programs.
  • Making healthier life choices.

4-H alumni echo the sentiment, often attributing their community and STEM engagements to the skills and values they acquired during their time with 4-H.

For those wants to join the movement, 4-H offers a plethora of avenues like camps, after-school programs, and enrichment opportunities. Interested youth can connect through the local NDSU Extension office or sign up online here.

Nationally recognized, 4-H stands tall as the premier research-based youth development organization, impacting over six million young lives. In North Dakota, the program flourishes under NDSU and NDSU Extension's guidance.
