North Dakota Water Resources welcome new director

By Scout Nelson

Governor Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota announced the appointment of Reice Haase as the new director of the Department of Water Resources. This key position oversees the state’s water management and planning, critical to both urban and agricultural stakeholders.

Reice Haase, previously a senior policy advisor in the Governor’s Office and deputy executive director of the North Dakota Industrial Commission, brings a rich background in environmental science and policy. His experience is expected to drive forward North Dakota’s initiatives on clean and sustainable water resources, which are vital for the state’s residents, as well as its agricultural and industrial sectors.

Governor Armstrong praised Haase for his comprehensive understanding of natural resources and commitment to the state. “Reice will serve our citizens well with his strong background in natural resources and deep understanding of the critical importance of clean, reliable, affordable water to North Dakota,” said Armstrong.

Haase’s career began in the private sector, where he worked on environmental site assessments and resource compliance, equipping him with the practical and regulatory knowledge necessary for his new role. He also contributed to significant policy developments related to energy, agriculture, and emergency services during his tenure in the state government.

The outgoing director, Andrea Travnicek, is credited with her leadership over more than three years, during which she steered the department through various initiatives aimed at enhancing the state’s water resources management. Travnicek will assist with the transition until the end of the month, ensuring a smooth handover during the ongoing legislative session.

In addition to Haase's appointment, Governor Armstrong announced Zach Greenberg as the interim state labor commissioner. Greenberg, a recent legal and policy advisor in the Governor’s Office, is tasked with overseeing North Dakota’s labor and human rights laws.

These appointments reflect the state's commitment to maintaining and enhancing the framework that supports North Dakota’s infrastructure, workforce, and natural resources. Both Haase and Greenberg are expected to bring fresh perspectives and leadership to their respective roles, aligning with North Dakota’s strategic goals for economic and environmental sustainability.
