North Dakota youth shine at congress

By Scout Nelson

The National 4-H Congress, held from November 29 to December 3 in Atlanta, Georgia, was a platform for five North Dakota youths to advance their leadership abilities and prepare to impact their local clubs and communities. The theme for the event was "Courage to Grow, Heart to Serve," emphasizing personal development and community service.

This annual event draws young people from across the nation, allowing them to meet peers with similar interests and diverse backgrounds. For the North Dakota delegates, it was a chance to step outside their comfort zones and enhance various skills. They participated in workshops and activities that focused on leadership, communication, and cultural understanding.

One delegate shared her experience, noting the confidence she gained in her leadership skills and her desire to apply these skills in her community. Another highlighted the importance of stepping out of comfort zones, which the Congress encouraged through its interactive and engaging environment.

A North Dakota 4-H volunteer, accompanying the delegates, observed the transformative experiences of the youths. She noted the "light bulb" moments as delegates from different states and territories exchanged ideas and learned from one another.

Looking ahead, the North Dakota State University Extension 4-H Youth Development Center is already preparing for next year's Congress. They have opened applications for the 2025 delegation, with a deadline of August 1, 2025. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the NDSU Extension leadership and volunteer development specialist for more details.

The 4-H program, supported by the North Dakota 4-H Foundation, continues to offer such educational opportunities to nurture the next generation of leaders. The experiences at the National 4-H Congress are not just about personal growth; they equip youths with the skills needed to make a difference in their communities, fostering a better future for all.
