North Dakota State University’s Carrington Research Extension Center will host the annual NDSU Feedlot School on Jan. 22-23, 2025. This two-day event is tailored for individuals involved in cattle production, including feeders, backgrounders, and industry personnel.
The intensive course aims to improve feedlot production techniques and profitability. According to experts, excelling in cattle feeding requires mastering several aspects of the business. “Cattle feeding is a very competitive business,” notes an NDSU Extension livestock systems specialist. “Making cattle feeding profitable is usually a result of doing many things right, not just one thing better.”
Key topics covered at the school include feedlot nutrition, facility management, waste management, and marketing strategies. Participants will also learn about facility design, budgeting, beef quality assurance, ration formulation, disease management, and alternative market programs.
Practical sessions such as bunk reading, feed delivery, and manure management provide hands-on experience. Attendees will benefit from a commercial feedlot tour and a visit to the Carrington Research Extension Center's livestock facilities.
The event is led by regional cattle experts and NDSU faculty with extensive feedlot management experience. These sessions are tailored for North Dakota’s cattle industry and offer long-term networking opportunities for participants.
The registration fee is $200, covering meals but not lodging. Interested individuals can register by Jan. 5 at ndsu.ag/feedlot-school25. Participants must arrange their own accommodation.
For more information or to join the waiting list for the next session, contact the event organizer at 701-652-2951 or via email. This program is an excellent opportunity to refine cattle management skills and enhance overall business profitability.
