North Dakota celebrated a significant achievement in the 2024 growing season, as its aerial applicators treated a historic 5.5 million acres of cropland. This achievement not only surpassed the previous record of 5.2 million acres set in 2015 but also exceeded the 20-year state average of about 4 million acres annually.
Such results underscore the vital role of aerial applicators in the agriculture sector and their impact on both the local and national levels.
Kyle Wanner, Executive Director of the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission, praised the dedication and innovation of these professionals, stating, “Reaching 5.5 million acres treated in 2024 is a testament to the dedication and innovation of North Dakota’s aerial applicators. Their efforts are essential to protecting our crops, supporting our farmers, and strengthening our state’s economy.”
The state boasts 78 licensed manned aerial applicators who operate 183 aircraft and employ 156 skilled pilots. These aerial applicators utilize advanced technology and precision techniques to protect crops from pests and diseases promptly and effectively.
Steve Iglehart, a local aerial applicator and current president of the North Dakota Agricultural Aviation Association (NDAAA), emphasized the precision of their work, noting, “Our work is all about timing and precision. When crops are under threat from pests or disease, aerial application ensures farmers get the protection they need quickly and effectively.”
Furthermore, the introduction of unmanned aerial applicators in 2022 marks a significant advancement in agricultural aviation. This emerging sector has seen rapid growth, with 21 licensed unmanned aerial applicators now servicing nearly 70,000 acres, demonstrating the evolving nature of crop protection and management.
The role of aerial applicators extends beyond crop treatment. They are instrumental in boosting crop production, reducing losses from pests, weeds, and diseases, and ultimately supporting the broader state and national economy. Their continued efforts are crucial in ensuring the sustainability and health of North Dakota’s agricultural sector, which plays a pivotal role in feeding the nation and the world.
