North Dakota maps groundwater with aerial survey

By Scout Nelson

The North Dakota Department of Water Resources (DWR) is gearing up for an aerial survey to map crucial groundwater resources in four southeastern counties.

Expected to begin as early as July 8th, 2024, the project will utilize a helicopter towing a large antenna to scan the land beneath the surface.

This antenna transmits and receives electromagnetic signals, creating detailed images of the underground geology. This information will be instrumental in pinpointing buried glacial aquifers, which serve as significant sources of groundwater.

"Aerial electromagnetic surveys have become a game-changer in groundwater exploration," says DWR Director Andrea Travnicek. "The vast amount of data collected over recent years has played a vital role in scientifically managing, investigating, and allocating the state's precious groundwater resources."

The survey will encompass roughly 1,455 miles of flight paths. The helicopter will follow a grid pattern, primarily flying east-west in lines spaced between 500 and 2,000 meters apart. This meticulous approach will cover a total area of 1,360 square miles.

The DWR has partnered with Aqua Geo Frameworks, LLC (AGF) and their affiliates for this specialized airborne geophysical survey. AGF boasts highly trained pilots experienced in low-level flying, essential for geophysical surveys.

They collaborate closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ensure all flights adhere to safety regulations and airspace restrictions. It's important to note that flights will not occur directly overpopulated areas.
