Crop Variety Tour Highlights Wheat Barley and Soybean Research

By Scout Nelson

A crop variety tour is set to take place 2½ miles east of Dazey, North Dakota, along Highway 26. This event offers farmers a close look at spring wheat, barley, and soybean trial plots. Attendees will also enjoy a free lunch after the tour.

Organized with support from research and extension experts, the tour gives local producers the chance to learn about the latest advancements in crop production and technology.

Kristin Simons, Research Agronomist at the Carrington Research Extension Center (REC), opens the event with a “Variety Overview.” She will share updates on new and promising spring wheat and barley varieties, focusing on yield potential, disease resistance, and regional performance.

Ana Carcedo, Extension Agronomist for Broadleaf Crops, will deliver a “Soybean Update.” Her talk covers the current growing season, recent challenges in soybean production, and tips for improving soybean health and yield.

Rupak Karn, Extension Precision Ag Specialist at Carrington REC, will lead a live “Drone Demonstration.” Attendees will see how drones are used in agriculture to monitor crop health, gather field data, and support decision-making for precision farming.

This field tour is designed to be both educational and practical. Farmers, agronomists, and students can explore crop performance firsthand, ask questions, and connect with agriculture experts in person.

By combining traditional field knowledge with new tools like drone technology, the event highlights how modern farming continues to evolve. It also offers a chance for farmers to share experiences and prepare for future growing seasons with better information.
