NDSU student wins Farm Bureau discussion meets

NDSU student wins Farm Bureau discussion meets

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University (NDSU) senior Alex Huber won the North Dakota Farm Bureau (NDFB) Collegiate Discussion Meet held on Nov. 22-23 at the Bismarck Hotel and Convention Center. The competition was part of the 82nd NDFB Annual Meeting.

Huber competed against three other participants, including fellow NDSU student Samual Green. The other contestants, from Dickinson State University, were Paul Hanebutt and Sydney Ellingson.

Huber, who studies agricultural economics and animal science, grew up on a farm and ranch near Jud, North Dakota, and plans to return to his family’s operations after graduation. His advisor, Alisha Nord-Donnelly, praised his achievements: "Huber is an outstanding student and Farm Bureau member. Being a senior, it has been fun to watch him grow and become engaged in policy development and education."

The NDFB Collegiate Discussion Meet challenges participants to engage in thoughtful, constructive conversations on vital agricultural issues. The format simulates real committee meetings, where contestants exchange ideas and work toward consensus on predetermined topics. This competition emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, providing students with a deeper understanding of agricultural policy and encouraging skill development essential for future leadership roles.

As the state winner, Huber will represent North Dakota at the American Farm Bureau Collegiate Discussion Meet. This national event will take place during the AFBF FUSION Conference in March 2025 in Denver, Colorado.

The NDFB Discussion Meet serves as an excellent platform for aspiring agricultural leaders, fostering the skills and knowledge necessary to tackle future challenges in the industry.
