House Bill Boosts Access to Local Farm Food Supply

House Bill Boosts Access to Local Farm Food Supply

By Jamie Martin

On July 29, a bipartisan group of U.S. Representatives introduced a new bill that supports both farmers and families facing hunger. The Local Farmers Feeding our Communities Act (LFFC Act) of 2025 is designed to improve food access and create new opportunities for small and mid-sized farms.

The bill is backed by Representatives from different states and parties. It allows the USDA to create cooperative agreements with states and tribal governments to purchase unprocessed or lightly processed foods directly from local farmers, ranchers, and fishers.

The foods will go to community organizations like schools, nonprofits, and food banks that serve families in need. The bill focuses on helping small, beginner, mid-sized, and veteran producers.

The bill provides technical assistance to farmers. This includes help with food safety training, production upgrades, and other improvements that allow producers to grow into larger wholesale markets.

Supporters of the bill, including the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC), say it balances farm support and food access. They applaud the bill’s aim to strengthen community food systems while giving family farmers more consistent market options.

“This bill supports healthy food systems, small producers, and hungry communities,” says NSAC.

By connecting producers with food aid networks, the bill helps reduce waste, improve nutrition, and support local economies.
