The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated several drought-affected counties as natural disaster areas. This designation provides important support to agricultural producers facing financial challenges caused by prolonged dry conditions.
Through this designation, eligible farmers and ranchers can apply for emergency loans from the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA). These loans help producers recover from losses and continue operating their farms during difficult conditions.
Emergency loans can be used for several recovery needs. Producers may use the funds to replace essential equipment, purchase livestock, reorganize farm operations, or refinance certain existing debts. Loan applications are reviewed based on the extent of losses, available security, and the applicant's ability to repay the loan.
The disaster designation follows drought conditions identified by the U.S. Drought Monitor. Areas included in the designation experienced severe drought for at least eight consecutive weeks or reached extreme to exceptional drought levels during the growing season.
The affected area includes several counties in Montana. Primary counties eligible for assistance are Custer, Fallon, Garfield, Rosebud, and Treasure.
In addition, producers in neighboring counties may also qualify for assistance because of their proximity to the disaster area.
Eligible contiguous counties in Montana include:
Big Horn, Carter, McCone, Musselshell, Petroleum, Phillips, Powder River, Prairie, Valley, Wibaux, and Yellowstone.
Additional eligible counties in North Dakota include:
Bowman, Golden Valley, and Slope.
The disaster declaration is intended to provide financial relief to producers impacted by drought. Many farm operations face reduced crop production, forage shortages, and other challenges when dry conditions persist throughout the growing season.
Access to emergency financing can help producers meet immediate needs while planning for future production. The assistance may also help maintain farm stability and reduce the economic effects of drought-related losses.
Farmers and ranchers located in eligible counties are encouraged to review available USDA assistance programs and determine whether emergency loan support fits their recovery plans.
The application deadline for emergency loan assistance is April 26, 2027. Producers should contact their local USDA Farm Service Agency office for details about eligibility requirements and the application process.
