Farmers markets give families an easy way to find fresh, seasonal foods while supporting nearby farmers. Fruits and vegetables sold at these markets are often harvested close to the time they reach consumers, helping shoppers enjoy fresh produce at their best.
Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D., R.D., L.R.D., North Dakota State University Extension food and nutrition specialist and professor, highlighted the value of farmers markets and encourages families to make fruits and vegetables a regular part of their meals. Local markets also give shoppers opportunities to meet growers and learn more about where their food comes from.
Farmers markets can offer much more than vegetables. Depending on the location, shoppers may find fruits, eggs, meat, poultry, honey, and other locally produced foods. North Dakota residents can use the state Department of Agriculture’s local foods directory to find farmers markets, farm sales, roadside stands and u-pick operations.
Fresh produce should still be handled safely after purchase. Rinse fruits and vegetables under cool running water, refrigerate cut produce and keep it away from raw meat and its juices to prevent cross-contamination.
Eating more fruits and vegetables also supports healthy eating habits. The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage people to include fruits and vegetables throughout the day. A useful starting goal for adults is about three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit daily.
