ND state university leads animal disease response training

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University Extension, in collaboration with multiple state and federal agencies, is set to conduct emergency preparedness training. This event, titled "Emergency Response Preparedness for Foreign Animal Diseases and Mass Livestock Mortalities in North Dakota," aims to better equip local responders to handle potential animal health crises effectively.

Scheduled for June 11-12 and again on September 10-11, 2024, at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center, the training will accommodate 200 participants. It is designed primarily for Extension agents, emergency managers, veterinarians, and veterinary technicians who might encounter mass livestock mortalities.

The comprehensive training will cover various critical topics, including an overview of animal diseases, biosecurity measures, personal protective equipment, decontamination processes, incident command systems, and stress management techniques among others.

Participants will also engage in hands-on demonstrations and a response simulation exercise, ensuring they gain practical experience in addition to theoretical knowledge.

Each participant will receive a kit containing personal protective equipment necessary for safely conducting farm visits. The training not only focuses on immediate response tactics but also on effective communication in high-stress situations and humane practices in animal handling and carcass disposal.

For those interested in attending, registration details can be found Here or by contacting Mary Keena at Mary.Keena@ndsu.edu or by phone at 701-652-2951.

This training is crucial for enhancing the preparedness of local teams against the backdrop of increasing threats to livestock health and ensuring the continuity of agricultural operations in North Dakota.
