Sheep and Goat Breeding Webinar to Support Producer Success

Sheep and Goat Breeding Webinar to Support Producer Success

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension and University of Minnesota (UMN) Extension are teaming up to host a sheep and goat reproduction webinar on June 16 at 7 p.m. This event is designed for farmers, 4-H members, livestock business professionals, and anyone interested in small ruminant care and breeding.

The webinar will feature Rachel Gibbs and Lacey Quail, livestock specialists with NDSU Extension. Rachel works at the Hettinger Research Extension Center, while Lacey is based at the Carrington Research Extension Center.

Their main goal is to provide practical tips to help farmers prepare their ewes and does for the breeding season. This includes guidance on animal health, timing, and nutrition to ensure strong reproductive performance.

Lacey Quail will talk about how to get animals ready for breeding, especially focusing on steps to take before the season starts. Rachel Gibbs will explain common reproduction protocols that are available for sheep and goats. She will also discuss artificial insemination options and when they might be useful for producers.

The webinar will help both new and experienced livestock owners better manage their herd’s reproductive cycle. With strong planning, farmers can improve birth rates and raise healthy lambs and kids.

Pre-registration is required to attend the event. Those interested should visit z.umn.edu/GSRepro to sign up. Once registered, a Zoom link will be sent immediately, and all participants will get access to a recording of the session afterward.
