ND dairy industry thrives with new legislation

ND dairy industry thrives with new legislation

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota's dairy industry recently received a boost with the announcement of two potential large-scale dairy operations. Traill County is set to welcome a massive 25,000-cow dairy herd, while a 12,500-head dairy will be established north of Wahpeton in Richland County. This follows legislative efforts aimed at revitalizing the state's animal agriculture sector.

For years, the industry faced challenges including limited processing facilities, labor shortages, and the high cost of modern technology. Recognizing this, lawmakers prioritized supporting animal agriculture during the 2023 legislative session.

Their strategy focused on collaboration and highlighting the industry's benefits to North Dakota. New legislation addressed limitations stifling growth.

A statewide analysis identified optimal locations for animal production facilities, ensuring community buy-in. Additionally, investment options were modified, allowing family farms to pool resources for expensive equipment and infrastructure.

Furthermore, the legislature provided financial assistance to rural communities developing animal agriculture operations. This funding eases the burden on local taxpayers by supporting improvements to infrastructure like roads, bridges, water systems, and electricity. Regulatory changes were also implemented.

Zoning regulations were reviewed to ensure compliance with state laws, providing businesses with clarity and confidence regarding environmental and property rights.

These legislative efforts created a favorable environment for the recently announced dairies and pave the way for future growth in the animal agriculture sector.

Lawmakers remain committed to ensuring a vibrant and thriving industry that benefits both North Dakota's people and communities.
