Cattle breeders' guide to reproductive success

The upcoming reproductive strategies workshop, hosted by North Dakota State University’s Dickinson Research Extension Center, promises to be a cornerstone event for cattle breeders and agricultural specialists.

Scheduled for November 14 from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. MST, this workshop will be held at the Agriculture Building Auditorium of Dickinson State University, located at 400 State Ave., Dickinson, North Dakota.

Toby Stroh of Dickinson State University's Department of Agriculture and Technical Studies will emcee the event, ensuring a smooth flow between the diverse and informative sessions planned for the day.

Attendees will gain insights from a lineup of seasoned experts who will cover a wide array of topics critical to modern cattle reproduction and breeding techniques.

The sessions will kick off with a welcome and announcements by Douglas Landblom, a research specialist from DREC, followed by discussions on practical and strategic aspects of cattle reproduction.

Topics include effective management practices for reproductive success, shared by Derrick Dukart of the Dukart Ranch, and advanced reproductive management strategies for maximizing production in natural service settings, presented by Joe Dalton via Zoom from the University of Idaho and George Perry from Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center.

After a lunch break, the workshop will resume with a focus on capturing the genetic value of superior calves, discussed by Troy Marshall from the American Angus Association. Nutritional management of replacement heifers for enhanced reproductive success will be addressed by Shelby Rosasco from the University of Wyoming.

Additional sessions will update participants on the latest research in single-TAI, delayed feedlot entry, and the economic implications of these practices, presented by Douglas Landblom and Songul Senturklu from Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey. Tim Petry, an NDSU Extension livestock economist, will provide insights into cattle price trends and market outlooks for 2024-2025.

The workshop will conclude with final remarks and an opportunity for attendees to network and discuss the topics presented, making this an invaluable event for those involved in the cattle industry aiming to enhance their operations through improved reproductive strategies.
