June is National Dairy Month, a time to appreciate both cows and farmers for their essential role in providing dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt. Each cow produces around 6.5 gallons of milk daily, helping meet our nutritional needs.
Dairy foods offer 13 essential nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D, protein, and potassium. These nutrients help build strong bones, support muscle function, and promote overall health. Milk is fortified with vitamin D and A, which are important for strong bones, good vision, and a healthy immune system.
Although many plant-based milks such as almonds, oatmeal, and rice are available, they usually contain added nutrients and are lower in protein than cow milk. Soy milk is a complete plant-based protein, but dairy milk typically has more calcium, vitamin B12, and zinc.
For people with lactose intolerance, lactose-free milk or small servings of dairy with meals may help avoid discomfort. People with milk allergies should check labels carefully and may choose plant-based alternatives.
Research shows that dairy can reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. Fermented dairy products like yogurt and kefir also support gut health with live cultures.
Dairy Month is a great time to try fun dairy activities. Making ice cream in a bag is a simple and educational way to learn about food science. It only requires milk or cream, sugar, vanilla, ice cream, and salt.
Whether enjoying a cold glass of milk or making a homemade treat, Dairy Month reminds us how valuable dairy is to our daily lives, offering nutrition and fun all in one.
