$6M supports advanced biofuels innovation

$6M supports advanced biofuels innovation

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $6 million in funding for three projects focused on advancing biofuel technology.

These initiatives, supported by the Inflation Reduction Act, aim to enhance biofuel production performance, reduce costs, and promote sustainability.

The selected projects include -

  • Air Company Holdings (Brooklyn, NY) - Developing sustainable aviation fuel from biogenic carbon dioxide.
  • Erg Bio Inc. (Dublin, CA) - Demonstrating flexible biomass deconstruction and conversion technology.
  • Terragia Biofuels (Hanover, NH) - Converting corn stover into ethanol using engineered bacteria.

These projects align with DOE’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge and EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard Program, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while expanding the renewable fuels sector. Biofuels are produced from renewable biological sources such as plants and algae and can strengthen the rural economy and reduce reliance on imported fuels.

The DOE’s 2023 Billion-Ton Report highlights the potential of renewable resources like agricultural residues and wet wastes, estimating 134 million tons of agricultural residues and 32 million tons of wet waste could be sustainably used in the near term.

“These projects will provide industry with new technologies to meet EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard Program requirements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand the nation’s renewable fuels sector,” according to the agencies.
