Northern N.D. Gets Little Precipitation

For the week ending Sunday, temperatures averaged two to four degrees below normal in the northeast part of the State and four to ten degrees below normal in the southwest, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Rainfall up to an inch was received in the southern parts of the State with little precipitation in the north. The much-needed moisture aided pasture growth and improved planting conditions. There were 3.8 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 7 short, 86 adequate, and 7 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 14 short, 81 adequate, and 4 surplus.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 2 poor, 28 fair, 62 good, and 7 excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 19 percent, equal to last year. Durum wheat planted was 11 percent, behind 22 last year, but near 14 for the five-year average. Spring wheat planted was 39 percent, behind 58 last year, but ahead of 28 average. Emerged was 10 percent, near 12 last year and 8 average.

Barley planted was 36 percent, behind 47 last year, but ahead of 22 average. Emerged was 10 percent, near 11 last year, but ahead of 5 average.

Oats planted was 38 percent, behind 47 last year, but ahead of 23 average. Emerged was 10 percent, near 12 last year and 7 average.

Corn planted was 16 percent, well behind 38 last year, but near 14 average. Emerged was 1 percent, ahead of 0 both last year and average.

Soybeans planted was 2 percent, behind 10 last year, but near 3 average.

Canola planted was 11 percent, behind 22 last year, but near 10 average.

Sunflowers planted was 1 percent, ahead of 0 last year, but equal to average.

Flaxseed planted was 9 percent, near 7 both last year and the average.

Dry peas planted was 32 percent, behind 42 last year, but ahead of 19 average. Emerged was 1 percent, behind 7 last year, but near 4 average.

Potatoes planted was 9 percent, behind 26 last year, but near 11 average.

Sugarbeets planted was 74 percent, behind 91 last year, but well ahead of 38 average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 28 fair, 62 good, and 7 excellent. Stock water supplies rated 1 percent very short, 8 short, 83 adequate, and 8 surplus.
