Wind Power Leads North Dakota Renewable Energy Production in 2025

Wind Power Leads North Dakota Renewable Energy Production in 2025

By Scout Nelson

Recent 2025 data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) highlights North Dakota’s continued leadership in renewable electricity, especially wind power. According to the report, more than 40% of the state’s electricity comes from renewable sources, with wind energy making up the majority.

This figure focuses on utility-scale energy generation and does not include small-scale solar or residential wind systems, which remain low in North Dakota. Still, the data clearly shows how important wind energy is to the state’s overall power supply.

North Dakota’s percentage of wind-generated electricity is more than three times higher than the national average. This places the state among the top in the country for wind energy contribution to the power grid. The widespread use of wind turbines across the state’s plains plays a big role in this success.

Wind energy is not only renewable but also a clean source of power that helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels. As utility companies invest more in wind technology, the state continues to grow its green energy footprint. This benefits the environment while also supporting local jobs and rural economies.

The data shows how much progress North Dakota has made in using wind energy to meet its electricity needs. It also highlights the state’s ongoing commitment to cleaner, more sustainable energy options for the future.
