Town halls address U.S. cattle Industry crisis

Ashley and Hebron were the talk of North Dakota last week. Why? They held enlightening town hall meetings with I-BAND and R-CALF USA about the U.S. cattle industry's woes.

Scott Shively, a champ from I-BAND, simplified their goals. They want cattle folks to have choices, influence, and a louder voice. And his big ask? Keep national beef bodies separate from lobbyists.

He also dropped a big hint – the 2023 Farm Bill is our ticket to change. Especially if it includes the sounding OFF Act. It promises clearer operations and a better beef system.

Bill Bullard from R-CALF USA added more spice. Though cattle prices are soaring, costs are too. Using cool charts, he showed how our beloved industry is taking a nosedive. “Change is needed, or we're looking at smaller farms, fewer cows, and limited markets,” he cautioned.

We've lost nearly 77% of smaller feedlots in recent years. Meaning a massive drop in cattle buyers. But there's hope! Bullard believes the 2023 Farm Bill is our magic wand. “Clear beef labeling is a must for better competition,” he highlighted.

He also pointed out sneaky tactics by giant beef packers that hurt prices. They avoid price talks and manipulate the system.

Big thanks to local heroes like Brokaw Ranch and Just Insurance for making these meetings a hit with great food!
