North Dakota State University highlights that agricultural research plays an important role in improving both livestock production and human health. A long-term research program led by Larry Reynolds, NDSU University Distinguished Professor of animal science, focuses on solving major pregnancy-related challenges that affect animals and people worldwide.
His work studies problems such as infertility, low birth weight, and premature birth. These issues impact farm productivity and create serious health and economic challenges. By improving pregnancy outcomes, this research helps farmers raise healthier animals while also supporting better human health.
“My laboratory focuses on ‘Problems of Pregnancy,’ which include infertility (the inability to conceive and establish a pregnancy), poor pregnancy outcomes (primarily reflected by low birthweight) and premature birth. These problems of pregnancy have major socioeconomic and health implications for livestock and for humans as well,” Larry Reynolds said.
The research team works on finding practical solutions, such as improving fertility rates and reducing early birth rates. Their goal is to support both agricultural success and medical progress.
“As we say in the lab, ‘What could be more important work than figuring out how to make healthier babies?’” Reynolds said.
Reynolds’ background in agriculture inspires his work. Growing up in a ranching environment helped him understand real farming challenges. Over time, he became a leader in animal science research and education.
Collaboration is a key part of this research. Experts from different fields use modern tools like data analysis, imaging technology, and advanced science methods to improve results. These partnerships help expand knowledge and create better solutions.
Students also play an important role. They are involved in research from an early stage, gaining hands-on experience, and learning how science can improve the world.
Looking ahead, the research continues to grow with support from universities and partners. It aims to develop new solutions that improve agriculture, support farmers, and create healthier lives for both animals and humans.
