Sheep and Goat Ultrasound Training Set for May

Sheep and Goat Ultrasound Training Set for May

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University Extension is organizing a three-day sheep and goat ultrasound certification training scheduled for May 11-13, 2026, at the Hettinger Research Extension Center Livestock Lab. The program offers a valuable opportunity for livestock producers, students, and professionals to gain practical skills in carcass ultrasound technology.

This hands-on training focuses on teaching participants how to use ultrasound tools to evaluate sheep and goats. The course includes both classroom learning and live animal practice, helping attendees understand how to collect and use data for better livestock management.

The first two days of the program run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include 3 hours of classroom education along with live demonstrations and guided practice sessions. Participants receive one-on-one training, allowing them to build confidence and improve their technical skills.

On the third day, participants take part in the official certification process. This certification is offered through the National Sheep Improvement Program and is required for those who want to provide ultrasound scanning services to NSIP members.

The training also covers how to use ultrasound results in genetic selection programs and youth livestock shows. These skills help producers make informed decisions to improve animal quality and performance.

For individuals whose certification has expired or those already certified in cattle or swine, a refresher session is available. This session takes place on Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., followed by certification on Wednesday morning.

The full training program costs $300 per person and includes a light breakfast and lunch. A certification only option is available for $125. Registration is limited to 15 participants, and the deadline to apply is May 1. For registration fill the form: https://docs.google.com/.

Participants are responsible for their own lodging arrangements. Local hotel options are available in Hettinger. For more details, interested individuals can contact Rachel Gibbs via email, rachel.gibbs.1@ndsu.edu.
