North Dakota Project Safe Send program offers a free and convenient way to dispose of unwanted pesticides. This program is open to farmers, homeowners, and anyone else who has unusable pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, or fungicides.
“Over the past 32 years, thousands of people have brought more than 6.2 million pounds of chemicals to Project Safe Send,” Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring said. “It is a safe, simple and non-regulatory program that helps people safely and legally get rid of unusable pesticides at no charge.”
Pesticides should never be poured down drains or thrown in the trash. Improper disposal can contaminate water sources and harm wildlife. Project Safe Send provides a responsible alternative.
The program accepts a variety of unusable pesticides, including:
- Expired pesticides
- Banned pesticides
- Leaking or damaged containers
Here's how to participate in Project Safe Send:
- Check your storage areas for any unwanted pesticides.
- If containers are leaking or deteriorating, place them in larger containers with absorbent material.
- Free heavy-duty plastic bags are available from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture if needed.
- Pre-register if you have more than 1,000 pounds of pesticides (not required for smaller amounts).
The program runs throughout July at various North Dakota Department of Transportation facilities. All collections occur from 8 am to noon local time.
For more information or to pre-register, contact Dylan Zubke at the North Dakota Department of Agriculture at 701-425-3016 or dbzubke@nd.gov.
