NDSU Offers Free Suicide Prevention Training for Farmers

NDSU Offers Free Suicide Prevention Training for Farmers

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University Extension is offering two free Question. Persuade. Refer. (QPR) suicide prevention webinars to help agriculture communities learn practical skills for recognizing and responding to mental health concerns.

The webinars are scheduled for Sept. 1, 2026, at 11 a.m. and Oct. 6, 2026, at 1 p.m. Each online session lasts about 90 minutes and focuses on the unique pressures experienced by farmers, ranchers, farm families, and others working in agriculture.

QPR training is similar to CPR training because it prepares participants to respond during a mental health crisis.

The program teaches people how to recognize warning signs of emotional distress or suicidal thoughts, start supportive conversations, and guide individuals toward professional help and available resources.

Participants will also learn why early action and open communication are important. Building strong support networks and encouraging people to ask for help can reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

The webinars will be led by Katie Henry, NDSU Extension agent for Cavalier County, Jill Sokness, NDSU Extension agent for Cass County, and Madeleine Smith, NDSU Extension pesticide specialist. Although the program focuses on agriculture, anyone interested in learning suicide prevention skills is welcome to participate.

The training is free through support from a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant. Registration is limited to the first 30 participants, so early registration is encouraged.
