Protect Fields from Haying Equipment Fires

Dry weather across parts of North Dakota is increasing the risk of hayfield fires during the haying season. Farmers are encouraged to inspect equipment carefully, monitor field conditions, and follow safe operating practices to reduce the chance of fires while cutting and baling hay.

North Dakota State University Extension farm and ranch safety specialist Angie Johnson and North Dakota State Forester Tom Claeys encourage producers to perform regular equipment inspections and preventive maintenance before entering the field. Proper maintenance helps reduce mechanical failures that can create dangerous sparks or overheating.

“A simple spark from a sickle mower or hay rake contacting a rock can lead to a grass fire situation quickly,” says Tom Claeys, North Dakota state forester. “We’re experiencing an influx of grass fires, and with the amount of ‘fuel’ or biomass in the ditches, meadows and Conservation Reserve Program areas, it is substantial this year. There’s enough ‘fuel’ out there that can easily catch fire with just one spark and quickly become out of control.”

One of the most common causes of hay equipment fires is worn roller bearings inside balers. Damaged bearings generate excessive heat and may ignite dry hay or straw. Friction, static electricity, and mechanical problems create even greater fire risks during baling.

“A common cause of hayfield fires can be due to mechanical issues in equipment, such as a baler, with the roller bearings as the primary problem,” says Angie Johnson, North Dakota State University Extension farm and ranch safety specialist. “The roller bearings inside the baler can easily become damaged due to wear and extended use.”

Farmers should inspect bearings, belts, chains, hydraulic hoses, and other moving parts before each day of work. Loose belts, worn bearings, and accumulated twine or net wrap should be repaired or removed immediately. Proper lubrication also helps reduce equipment wear and overheating.

“We have to remember that there is a tremendous amount of friction and static that is building up during baling,” says Johnson. “That combination of friction and static electricity or a mechanical failure on the baler added to extremely dry hay or straw is the perfect recipe for a fire.”

Johnson also recommends using an infrared heat thermometer to monitor roller bearing temperatures during breaks. A sudden increase in temperature may indicate a failing bearing that should be replaced before a fire starts.

“Using an infrared heat thermometer is a great tool to help monitor the temperature of your baler’s roller bearings,” says Johnson. “Take the time during a stretch break while baling to use the thermometer to check the temperature of your baler’s roller bearings. If you see a temperature spike with one or more bearings, it is time to stop and get the bearing replaced before your baler becomes damaged and catches fire.”

Producers should also carry a fully charged fire extinguisher, water, a shovel, and a cellphone while working in the field. Equipment should be parked only on mowed grass, gravel, or dirt to reduce fire risks. If a fire starts, call 911 immediately.

As Johnson reminds producers, “A baler can be replaced. You can’t.”
