The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) and North Dakota Stockmen’s Foundation (NDSF) are stepping up to help Texas ranchers after devastating fires. The recent fires in the Panhandle have caused significant losses to the cattle industry, leading to the creation of the Operation Lone Star Disaster Relief Fund.
With an initial $2,000 donation, the NDSA and NDSF are encouraging others to contribute towards aiding affected ranch families. Donations can be sent directly to the NDSF or through the website www.ndstockmen.org.
The fund aims to gather financial support from North Dakotans and distribute it entirely to wildfire victims in collaboration with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.
Jason Leiseth, NDSA president, expressed the deep empathy felt by the North Dakota cattle community for their Texas counterparts. The wildfires, described as the largest in Texas and the second largest in U.S. history, have resulted in over a million acres burned, surpassing the damage of numerous fires from 2017 to 2021 combined. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller highlighted the extensive losses, including over 3,600 cattle.
Jeff Schafer, NDSF President, underscored the solidarity from North Dakota, emphasizing the shared prayers and support for the impacted ranchers. The NDSF's status as a 501(c)3 charitable organization ensures that donations are tax-deductible, further encouraging contributions to this crucial cause.
“North Dakota cattlemen’s and cattlewomen’s hearts are aching as they learn about the aftermath of the Texas wildfires,” is a statement that captures the collective sentiment fueling the relief efforts. The initiative not only demonstrates the agricultural community's unity but also offers a beacon of hope to those facing the daunting task of rebuilding in the wake of unprecedented devastation.
