North Dakota boosts organic farming support

By Scout Nelson

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) is currently taking applications for the Organic Certification Cost Share Program for the fiscal year 2024, according to Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. Organic farmers, ranchers, processors, and handlers have a great chance with this program, which reimburses up to $750 for certification expenses paid between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024.

Organic certification is vital for producers and processors as it verifies that their products are grown or processed according to recognized organic methods.

This certification not only assures consumers of the organic integrity of the products but also enables sellers to label their items with the federal organic seal. Products carrying this seal generally attract higher prices in the market, benefiting the producers financially.

The program targets those certified by major organizations like Where the Food Comes from Organic and the Organic Crop Improvement Association Chapter 1, which handle most certifications for North Dakota’s organic producers.

These groups are directly managing the reimbursement process for their members. Meanwhile, organic producers not affiliated with these certifiers are encouraged to contact the NDDA directly for program details and application procedures.

Commissioner Goehring highlighted the support from the federal level, noting that the United States Department of Agriculture has allocated $97,500 to fund this initiative for 2024. This funding underscores the commitment to supporting organic practices and ensuring the growth of sustainable agriculture in North Dakota.
