As the new government prepares to take office, the National Farmers Union (NFU) has articulated its priorities for the upcoming administration, aiming to bolster the position of family farmers.
NFU President Rob Larew highlighted the urgency of the challenges facing these farmers, including market volatility and the need for a robust farm safety net.
The NFU's letter to government emphasizes strengthening the farm safety net due to the forecasted challenges in 2025, where declining crop prices and high interest rates could severely impact farmers.
"The safety net established in the 2018 Farm Bill will not be sufficient to help farmers withstand rapidly declining crop prices, high interest rates, and natural disasters," stated Larew.
In addition to farm safety, NFU calls for the enforcement of antitrust laws to ensure competitive markets and opposes the concentration that disadvantages family farmers.
Trade policies also feature prominently in NFU's agenda, advocating for thoughtful negotiation that does not harm farmers' financial stability.
Other significant concerns include advocating for a simplified tax code that benefits family farmers, the right-to-repair legislation, access to quality healthcare, and maintaining a stable agricultural workforce.
These priorities aim to secure a sustainable future for family farms across America, ensuring they thrive under the new administration's policies.
