North Dakota ethics guide for legislative session

North Dakota ethics guide for legislative session

By Scout Nelson

Welcome back to the Prairie Principles Newsletter! With the 69th Legislative Assembly set to convene in January, the North Dakota Ethics Commission is actively preparing and finalizing its legislative agenda.

The upcoming session offers public officials the chance to connect with citizens and stakeholders, address concerns, and craft solutions that will benefit North Dakota for generations to come.

In addition to planning its agenda, the Ethics Commission is dedicated to educating North Dakotans about ethics rules, aiming to equip those involved in the legislative process with the tools needed to address ethical concerns effectively.

This November and December, the Commission will host various legislative learning sessions tailored to different groups, including citizens, lobbyists, legislators, legislative employees, elected officials, and cabinet members.

Each session focuses on the needs of its respective audience, providing essential information to help participants engage responsibly during the legislative session.

In support of these sessions, the Commission has also revamped its Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page on its website. This updated resource includes more detailed information, cross-references to rules, and clear guidance on ethical practices.

By offering easy access to flowcharts, presentations, and videos, the Commission hopes to guide individuals through any ethical dilemmas they may face.

Maya Angelou’s words inspire this effort: “When we know better, we do better.” With these learning sessions and the resources available online, the Commission aims to empower individuals to understand ethics rules, Article XIV of the North Dakota Constitution, and Chapter 54-66 of the North Dakota Century Code, ultimately promoting responsible conduct throughout the legislative season.
