By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University’s Dickinson Research Extension Center (DREC) will host a soil health workshop on September 18, 2024. The event will cover topics such as roots, microbes, nutrient cycling, organic matter, and mycorrhizal fungi. The workshop begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m., MDT.

The morning session will take place at the Biesiot Activities Center in Dickinson, North Dakota, from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Presenters will include experts like Douglas Landblom from DREC and Susan Liebig from USDA-NRCS, covering topics such as the principles of soil health, the importance of soil organic matter, and multi-crop rotation’s role in nutrient cycling.

After lunch, participants will travel to the DREC Section 19 Integrated Systems Research Area in Manning, North Dakota, for the afternoon session from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Topics will include water movement through soil and the effect of diverse crop rotations on soil pH, with presenters from USDA-NRCS and NDSU.

On September 19, the North Dakota Soil and Water Conservation Society will hold its annual meeting at Dickinson State University. The agenda includes topics on enhancing carbon storage, the impact of drought on soil microbiology, and the value of alfalfa in crop rotation. The meeting will also feature a poster session, student talks, and awards.

Both events offer continuing education units (CEUs), and participants are encouraged to RSVP to help with meal planning. For more details on registration, visit ndsu.ag/drecsoilhealth.

These events are designed to support farmers, ranchers, and those interested in sustainable agriculture practices, providing valuable insights into soil management and conservation techniques.
