Following severe summer storms in June, livestock producers in North Dakota are facing increased animal deaths. North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension and its partners are offering helpful information for reporting and disposing of animal losses.
One key support available is the USDA Farm Service Agency’s Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP). This program provides financial assistance to eligible producers who lose livestock due to extreme weather beyond normal mortality.
To qualify for LIP, producers must gather and submit two types of documentation:
Beginning inventory – proof of how many animals were present before the event.
Death loss records – evidence showing how many animals were lost because of the storm.
Producers must file a notice of loss with their local FSA office and submit all required documents by March 1, 2026.
Acceptable beginning inventory records may include:
- Journal entries
- Ear tag data
- Invoices or canceled checks
- Vet, tax, or insurance records
- Brand, dairy, or government reports
Acceptable death loss documentation includes:
- Journal entries
- Dated photos
- Vet reports or third-party statements
- Disposal invoices
- Brand, bank, or tax records
NDSU Extension encourages producers to keep detailed and dated records. Accurate documentation is key to receiving support. The Extension office also provides guidance on proper disposal methods for animal losses to prevent health risks and environmental damage.
