Hoeven Urges Funding Bill and Farm Aid

Hoeven Urges Funding Bill and Farm Aid

By Scout Nelson

Senator John Hoeven has renewed his call for Congress to pass a clean, short-term continuing resolution to reopen the government and resume regular legislative work. Speaking on the Senate floor, Hoeven emphasized the importance of supporting farmers and ranchers while urging his colleagues to reject political gridlock.

The proposed funding bill, which passed the House of Representatives, would keep the government open through November 21. However, Senate Democrats voted against it, seeking additional spending provisions. Hoeven criticized the move, stating that reopening the government is essential for progress on appropriations and agriculture-related priorities.

“Once again, our Democrat colleagues can vote for a clean resolution to open the government and continue working for the American people,” said Hoeven. “It’s time to end this shutdown and return to bipartisan work.”

Hoeven highlighted agriculture as a key focus area, stressing the need for continued federal assistance for farmers facing economic pressure from China’s trade tactics.

He explained that China’s efforts to lower commodity prices and raise production costs are hurting U.S. producers. Supporting farmers now, he said, would strengthen America’s negotiating position in trade talks.

He pointed to past successes such as the Market Facilitation Program, launched under President Trump, which helped sustain farmers during trade negotiations and led to a $50 billion Chinese purchase agreement for U.S. agricultural commodities.

Hoeven urged lawmakers to follow that example and provide a bridge of financial support to producers while long-term trade solutions are developed.

“The best way to stand up to China and protect our farmers is to act now,” he said. “Reopening the government and delivering targeted farm aid will help secure better markets and ensure the strength of American agriculture.”
