Florida Farm Law Officers Certified for Immigration Enforcement

Florida Farm Law Officers Certified for Immigration Enforcement

By Jamie Martin

Florida has strengthened its agricultural law enforcement by certifying all officers of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) under the federal 287(g) program.

This certification allows officers to assist with immigration enforcement, further supporting public safety across the state.

Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson announced the achievement, emphasizing the state’s commitment to law and order. “Florida is serious about law and order, and this certification is another step forward,” said Commissioner Wilton Simpson. “As a member of the State Board of Immigration Enforcement, I’ve pushed for stronger coordination with our federal partners — and now our officers are even better equipped to take action when they encounter individuals breaking the law.”

The 287(g) program, led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), trains local law enforcement officers to identify, process, and detain individuals who violate federal immigration laws during routine duties.

With this certification, FDACS officers are now better connected with federal partners and better prepared to enforce both state and federal laws.

Colonel Lee Adams of the FDACS Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement (OALE) highlighted the importance of this move, saying, “Florida’s law enforcement community is stronger and more connected than ever.”

The OALE plays a critical role in safeguarding Florida agriculture by operating over 20 agricultural interdiction stations. These stations inspect vehicles 24 hours a day, every day of the year, helping prevent the spread of pests and diseases, stop theft and trafficking, and protect the state’s food supply.

This certification not only enhances agricultural protection but also strengthens the state’s ability to address immigration-related issues through trained and authorized officers. By aligning local and federal efforts, Florida reinforces its focus on safety, agriculture, and law enforcement collaboration.
