North Dakota State University (NDSU) Department of Animal Sciences invites interested buyers to participate in a public auction of Romanov ewes and select Romanov and EasyCare rams. This auction provides a unique opportunity to acquire top-quality sheep genetics, crucial for enhancing farm productivity.
Interested parties can bid on 44 ewes and 7 rams by accessing the online closed bid form through the "Event Registration". The auction lineup includes 16 fall 2023 ewes, 8 two-year-old ewes, 12 three-year-old ewes, and 8 mature ewes. The herd sires feature 5 EasyCare rams and 2 Romanov rams, known for their robust health and breeding capabilities.
"Production economics suggest that the largest driver of profitability is the number of lambs born," says Travis Hoffman, NDSU and University of Minnesota Extension sheep specialist. Hoffman emphasizes that Romanov sheep significantly boost lambing percentages, mirroring the productivity of Finnsheep, making them ideal for spring ethnic lamb markets.
The NDSU ewes boast an impressive average lamb crop born of around 250% in the spring and 220% in the fall. The hybrid Romanov lambs grow rapidly, gaining about 0.7 pounds per day, and typically weigh between 80 to 100 pounds at five months old.
Bids for the sheep must be submitted by 5:00 pm CST on May 6, with the final bid-off occurring that evening. Winning bidders will be responsible for arranging transportation and must pick up their sheep by May 17.
