NDSA's 94th Convention - Beefing Up in Watford City
North Dakota Ag Connection - 09/25/2023

In 1929, North Dakota cattle producers faced a crisis due to cattle rustling. Andrew Johnston, a local cattleman, initiated the North Dakota Stockmen's Association (NDSA) to address this issue. The NDSA was founded on June 6, 1929, with John Leakey as its first president. Attendees contributed $5 to establish a reward fund for identifying thieves.

As the association grew, its mission expanded beyond rustler prevention. Today, the NDSA's mission is to unite, protect, promote, educate, and serve North Dakota's beef cattle industry.

In September, NDSA members are invited to the organization's birthplace for the 94th Annual Convention & Trade Show, held from September 28-30 in Watford City. The event promises a mix of education, networking, and fun.

Thursday, Sept. 28

The convention kicks off with a 9-Hole Golf Scramble and Hole-in-One Contest at Fox Hills Golf Course. The NDSA Board of Directors will hold their quarterly meeting at Teddy’s Residential Suites. The “End of the Rope” movie showing and museum visit will take place at the McKenzie County Heritage Park and North Dakota Oil Museum.

The Cattlemen’s Education Series includes a glimpse into the region’s energy industry, a rainfall simulator demonstration, and a federal lands discussion. Afterward, there will be a grand opening of the NDSA Trade Show, featuring 64 allied industry vendors, making it the largest trade show in NDSA history.

Friday, Sept. 29

The NDSA Trade Show reopens with an opening business session at the Rough Rider Center, featuring insights from National Cattlemen's Beef Association CEO Colin Woodall. Policy committee meetings address industry issues, and a night of donkey basketball provides entertainment for convention-goers.

Saturday, Sept. 30

The convention will feature speakers like Dan Halstrom and Hannah Thompson-Weeman, and a new "Hoofin' It Home" 5K Beef Walk/Run. The Foundation Luncheon will feature scholarship presentations and recognitions.

The closing session will allow committee chairmen to present reports and members to discuss policy resolutions and leadership selection. The convention will conclude with awards and a keynote address by Chris Koch, inspiring with his story of overcoming obstacles.
