The livestock camp, organized by North Dakota 4-H and supported by the Center for 4-H Youth Development, provides young participants with a valuable opportunity to build skills in animal care and showmanship. The multi-day program welcomes youth aged 8 to 18 and focuses on preparing them for county fairs and achievement events through hands-on learning.
Campers take part in a variety of practical activities designed to improve their understanding of livestock management. They learn how to groom, clip, and properly present animals in a show setting. The camp also teaches proper feeding practices and how to select strong and competitive livestock projects. These lessons help participants build confidence and improve their performance in competitions.
A key highlight of the camp is the showmanship contest, where participants demonstrate their skills and compete for awards. Quiz bowl activities are also included to test knowledge of livestock care and management. These activities make learning more engaging while helping youth strengthen both practical and academic skills.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own animals, except for rabbits and poultry. During the registration process, campers can select the type of livestock they plan to bring. This allows for a more personalized and hands-on learning experience throughout the camp. For registration, visit: https://www.ultracamp.com/clientlogin.aspx?idCamp=775&campcode=rtm&lang=en-Us
The camp begins with an afternoon check-in and ends in the late morning on the final day. A registration fee is required, with a deposit paid at sign-up and the remaining balance due before the camp starts. Scholarships are available for eligible families, making the program accessible to more participants. Overall, the livestock camp creates a supportive environment where youth can learn, practice, and grow. It helps them develop important life skills, gain confidence, and prepare for future opportunities in agriculture and livestock events.
