Tyler Tjelde Named Director of NDSU WREC

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University (NDSU) has announced Tyler Tjelde as the new director of the Williston Research Extension Center (WREC). In his new leadership role, Tjelde will oversee agricultural research and Extension programs that support producers in northwestern North Dakota and eastern Montana.

Tjelde’s appointment reflects NDSU’s continued commitment to advancing regional agriculture through science-based solutions and community collaboration. As director, he will manage the center’s staff, guide educational initiatives, and strengthen partnerships with NDSU faculty, Extension specialists, and industry stakeholders.

“The WREC plays a key role in advancing dryland and irrigated crop production practices for northwestern North Dakota and eastern Montana,” says Tjelde. “My former position as the WREC dryland irrigation agronomist allowed me to work closely with producers and researchers to find practical, research-based solutions. I look forward to building on that collaboration in this new leadership role.”

The Williston Research Extension Center focuses on essential areas such as crop variety development, plant disease management, cropping systems, and foundation seed production. Through its applied research and outreach programs, WREC provides farmers and ranchers with innovative tools to improve productivity and sustainability.

Marlen Eve, assistant director of field operations at the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, praised the appointment. “The Williston Research Extension Center has a proud tradition of serving North Dakota agriculture through applied research and outreach. Tyler’s leadership and expertise will help continue that legacy.”

Tjelde earned his bachelor’s degree in crop and weed science from NDSU in 2003 and a master’s degree in agronomy from Iowa State University in 2010. He officially began his new role on September 15, bringing years of hands-on agricultural experience and a strong dedication to supporting farmers and rural communities.

With his leadership, the Williston Research Extension Center aims to strengthen innovation, enhance producer collaboration, and promote sustainable agricultural practices across the Northern Plains.
